Bandwidth upgrade!

Now my site is back on again after running out of bandwidth once again, I decided to actually do something about it – like upgrade!!

Now gone to unlimited bandwidth, so now I can blog day by day – and not have to worry about the site going down.

Hurrah!

70-293 – Passed!

Just a quick post – now home from doing the 70-293 Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Network Infrastructure. I got a score of 877. Really pleased with that given that I don’t work with the technologies being questioned very often given the size of our network at work though.

Now moving on to 70-294, and then ultimately the (re)taking of 70-297.

Microsoft Exam 70-293 – Planning & Maintaining Win2k3

Just having a short break here from studying, and thought I would write a little post. Currently revising for the Microsoft exam 70-293 which I am taking on Monday (can think of other thigns to be doing on a Friday evening!). Just been going through and doing practice tests and looking things up on the Internet too. Nearly there though – I can now pass the practice tests and we are looking hopeful to pass the exam.

This is now one of the times that I wish that I worked in a larger network than I do. Currently I work with 15 servers and 530 clients, spread over a large site. There are some things though, that have just never been done at work, and now they are the points that I am falling down on. DNS/DHCP etc are fine, as they exist and are managed regularly. IPsec though has almost got me stumped. Also, Network Load Balancing, has never been considered because we just don’t have that much traffic!

Have been practicing and testing each of these little ‘niches’ though. Got my head around the encryption and authentication types and how filter lists, rules, and filter actions all tie in together.

It must be fantastic taking this exam if you have been exposed to all of this in a working environment before! Alas, maybe one day…

Oh, just before anyone comments, I do realise that I am only just taking the 2003 exams. I have been studying the entire course whilst I have been working, and learning as I do. Just taken me a while longer than I planned to actually complete all of the exams. I am looking forward to completing this and looking at the new features of Exchange 2010, Windows 7 (which I am already using) and SharePoint 2010.

After this, only 70-294 Planning and Maintaining Active Directory and 70-297 Designing Active Directory & Network Infrastructure to go!

Java Proxy Settings

Just been trying to work out why some Java applets have not been able to run on the network. We use a proxy server and the settings are deployed to each user (different settings per user), in the form of a PAC file which cannot be changed.

It appears that Java cannot handle the PAC file, because if I go into the Java applet in Control Panel, and set the PAC file in there, it all works.

Having found this, I thought that an easy fix would be to find the setting in the registry, create a custom ADM file and deploy using Group Policy.

It turns out though, that the settings for Java are not stored in the registry. There is a deployment.properties file.

This file, as far as I can tell, is a per-user file that is stored in the following location.

%userprofile%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment

You can edit the file in notepad and see the settings that you have specified in the Control Panel applet.

From this I have included the copying of the file to the local user location as part of the logon script. Makes sure that everyone is using the same settings. Would love to hear if anyone has any better ways of getting this file out.

Sharepoint Google Web Part

Just a quick post to link to and recommend a great web part freely available on the web.

The Google Web Part, by Mark Wagner, is a quick and simple add on which allows you to add the power of Google to your Sharepoint site. For me, it was a great way to alleviate all of the complaints about making our Sharepoint site the homepage for all users.

Been using it for a while, just had to install on a test machine, which prompted the post. Here’s the link.

http://blogs.crsw.com/mark/articles/1009.aspx

Installation is easy too. You can either use the Web Part Installer on the page, or run the following commands to add and deploy.

stsadm -o addwppack -filename CastleRockGoogleWebPart.cab
stsadm -o deploywppack -name CastleRockGoogleWebPart.cab -url http://yoursharepointsite -immediate

Happy Googling!

Hi!

Hi,

Finally sat down and got this site sorted! Just wish it hadn’t taken 3 weeks to sit down and click half a dozen buttons to make it work.

Anyhow, this blog will look at some of the things that I find, weird, wonderful and downright confusing. In a hope that at some point it might actually help someone.

Generally this will look at systems and software deployment, and Exchange server. However, it will probably branch out on a regular basis on to the other things that I am working with.

Back to setting up anyway.
